Landscape Studies

Terry Gess and I once received an artist residency on the west coast of Ireland. The experience was transformative. I was transfixed by the atmosphere, the ever changing sky as it met the water, the dramatic land formations.

It all influenced my response to the natural world, including the rural environment in WNC where I live - the qualities of ethereal light and color as the day unfolds. That wonder propelled me to create this work. I took a deep dive into the color blue– using it predominately in this collection of small oil and cold wax paintings.

Several years ago, I began painting using oil and cold wax medium and oil paintsticks, drawing on my years of working with color through dyeing and piecing in textiles. I love working in this medium with the sense of discovery I experience every day in the studio.
