Carmen Grier 


Artist Biography

Carmen Grier has been creating functional and art textiles for 40 years. She has recently added painting to her current practice. Carmen has taught and exhibited nationally, been awarded national and international residencies, and her award-winning work has been featured in Fiberarts Magazine and Surface Design Journal.

After earning a degree in music (BA, University of Iowa), Carmen soon found her way back to her true passion: visual art. She earned an MA from The University of Iowa in Textile Design followed by an MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art.

Carmen Grier's studio and home is located near Penland School of Craft in rural Mitchell County, NC where she resides with her husband, ceramic artist and writer Terry Gess. They met in the mid-1990’s while each was an artist-in-residence at Penland School of Craft.
